INSTALLATION: DISC MANAGER HARDWARE
What is Disc Manager 100 firmware and how do I update it?
Firmware is the embedded software in a hardware device (in this case,
the Disc Manager 100 unit).
Updates for the Disc Manager 100 firmware are released occasionally
and are available for download from the OpdiTracker website (www.opditracker.com). These updates may contain fixes or enhancements
to existing functionality and possibly new functionality.
Before you download an update, you should check to see what version of the firmware is currently running on your Disc Manager 100 units.
For each unit,
- From Windows Explorer, right-click the Disc Manager 100 unit
and then click Properties.
- Make sure the General tab is selected in the Disc Manager 100 Properties dialogue box. The Firmware version is shown next to the unit's serial number.
To download the latest firmware from the OpdiTracker website,
- Click the Download Software Updates quick link.
- On the Updates page, go to Disc Manager 100 Firmware Updates to see whether there is an update available for a firmware version newer than what is running on your Disc Manager 100(s).
- If there is a newer version available, follow the instructions on the website to download the update, and then load it on to each one of your Disc Manager 100 units.
We recommend that you keep your firmware updated, and ensure
that you have the same version of firmware running on ALL of
your Disc Manager 100 units.

Can I connect a USB cable to more than one Disc Manager 100 unit in a tower?
NO. DO NOT connect USB cables to more than one unit in a single tower. Connect a USB cable ONLY to the bottom (or base) unit in the tower. The additional (or upper) units receive their power and signaling through
the Disc Manager 100 connecting ports from the units below.

Why did I get a message about HID drivers being installed when I connect my Disc Manager 100 to the USB port?
HID (Human Interface Device) drivers are necessary for the operating system to communicate with your device through the USB port. These drivers work in conjunction with your OpdiTracker software to operate your Disc Manager 100.
If HID drivers are not installed on your computer when a unit is first plugged in, Windows automatically attempts to install these drivers. Please follow the prompts to install the drivers.
If you cannot successfully install the HID drivers, you will not be able to use your Disc Manager 100. Contact your computer vendor for assistance.

I installed the OpdiTracker software and connected my first Disc Manager 100 unit. Why doesn't the OpdiTracker software see the unit?
Make sure the OpdiTracker software is running.
Whenever OpdiTracker is running, its logo is displayed in your computer's task bar. If the logo is not displayed, use Windows Explorer to navigate to OpdiTracker, and then click 'Please start the OpdiTracker application'.
Make sure the Disc Manager 100 unit is properly connected.
See the Disc Manager 100 set up guide or user guide for full instructions showing how to connect Disc Manager 100 units to your computer, to each other, and to powered hubs.
Make sure your USB port is working correctly.
If you have another USB device (such as a mouse), plug it into the port to verify that your computer port is properly working and the device is recognised.
Make sure that there is a USB controller in your computer's Device Manager list.
In Windows 2000 and XP:
- From the Windows Start button, click Control Panel.
- If you're using Category view, open Performance and Maintenance.
- Double-click the System icon.
- Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
If there is no controller in the list, check the BIOS settings for the system to make sure the USB controller is enabled. If it is disabled, enable it and then reboot your computer.
Check the status of the new unit through your computer's Device Manager.
Open Device Manager as described above.
Each tower of Disc Manager 100's will appear as a single HID device within Device Manager.
If you see any entries with yellow exclamation points, run the hardware troubleshooter. If not, choose the USB controller from the list to check what devices are seen.

I added a Disc Manager 100 unit to an existing tower. Why doesn't the OpdiTracker software see the new unit?
Make sure that any individual tower is comprised of five (5) or fewer Disc Manager 100 units.
For safety and power reasons, the OpdiTracker software will not communicate with more than five units in one tower. However, you can further expand capacity by adding additional towers (again up to a maximum of 5 units per tower). Additional towers can be connected to your computer via USB cable plugged into another USB port on your computer or into a powered hub connected to your computer. Powered hubs are available in most retail computer stores. Make sure that the hubs electrical plug accommodates a minimum of 2.1 amps.
Make sure you have not co-mingled Disc Manager 100 units in a tower along with other simular looking storage devices, such as the Imation Disc Stakka.
You may have one tower of up to 5 units with Disc Manager 100 units and another tower of up to 5 Imation Disc Stakkas- as both operate via our Opditracker software. However, you simply can’t co-mingle the units within the same tower as the interconnector devices are slightly different.
Make sure any additional units are properly situated on top of one another, with the lower front pins of the upper unit properly inserted into the ports at the top front of the lower unit.
Remove the unit from the tower, and then place it back on again making sure the connectors on the bottom of the new unit align with the one below and are properly seated.
Make sure the USB cable is providing enough power for the tower.
Try disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable from the bottom unit on the tower. It is possible that there is not enough power through the USB ports to power up the stack.
If the USB is connected to a powered hub, it is essential that the hub power plug has a minimum of 2.1 Amps. Some hubs come with only 1.0 Amp power plugs – which will not sufficiently power 5 units.
Try connecting the unit directly to the computer to verify it is working. If so, connecting the unit as the start of a new tower (that is, to another USB port) may help (You may need to reboot your computer depending on your setup).
Failing that, connecting the tower through a powered USB hub should resolve the problem.

My Disc Manager 100 tower worked when it was connected directly to my computer. Why doesn't it work now that it is connected via a powered hub?
Make sure you haven't exceeded the limits for USB connections
The limit for USB device connections is 127 devices, and the depth of a USB chain is 5 hubs. See www.usg.org for more information.
Make sure the USB port is working correctly. If you have another USB device (such as a mouse), plug it into the port to verify that the port is working and the device is recognized. You can also try plugging the tower into another port in the powered hub.
Verify that the power plug on your powered hub provides for 2.1 Amps of power or more. Some hubs come with only 1.0 Amp power plugs – which will not sufficiently power 5 units.
Make sure the USB controller is in your computer's Device Manager list.
In Windows 2000 and XP:
- From the Windows Start button, click Control Panel.
- If you're using Category view, open Performance and Maintenance.
- Double-click the System icon.
- Click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
If there is a controller, check to see that the USB hub is seen by the system, and then reboot your computer.
If there is no controller in the list, check the BIOS settings for the system to make sure that the USB controller is enabled, and then reboot your computer. Related Links: http://www.usb.org

Can I connect Disc Manager 100 to a USB 2.0 port?
Yes. USB 2.0 is backwards compatible with the USB 1.1 specification. Therefore, you shouldn't encounter any problems when using the Disc Manager 100 on a 2.0 port, even if you mix 2.0 and 1.1 peripheral hardware. Related Links: http://www.usb.org
return to FAQ list
How do I connect the Disc Manager 100 if my computer does not have a free USB port?
You can purchase powered USB hubs from most computer retail stores. But remember to buy only powered hubs that have power plugs that provide for 2.1 Amps of power or more. Anything less will not provide enough power to operate a tower of five units.
